With 2023 being a world cup rugby year, and with South Africa¡¯s Heritage day falling in the middle of the world cup rugby schedule,
we could think of no better way than to celebrate the two things that South African¡¯s love. A good braai and rugby!
South Africa¡¯s Heritage day falls on the 24th September each year which celebrates the cultural wealth of South Africa.
To celebrate this day, South Africans usually gather together for a picnic/braai. This year, and as reigning rugby world cup champions,
we thought it would be a perfect time to host a touch rugby tournament in the format of a mini-world cup tournament and incorporate
this with our Heritage day celebrations.
We would like the Chambers of Commerce, Embassy¡¯s, and also businesses and associated groups, along with regular residents of South Korea,
to come along to join in a day of touch rugby, barbequing and socializing. There will be an after party and the Springbok/Ireland world cup
match is late the next morning so a good build up to that crunch game.
As a chamber, we are thus laying down the gauntlet and challenging the other chambers to enter a team into the touch rugby tournament
to claim bragging rights as the Seoul world cup touch champions!
The event will be held at Dulwich college where we will begin with the touch tournament where (hopefully) teams from Australia, New Zealand,
the UK, Ireland, France and perhaps even Canada and America, take on the South African team in a round robin touch rugby tournament to have
the honor to compete in the final.
Then it will be time to quench your thirst and fill up those stomachs. The event should run from 9:30am until early afternoon, a
nd we would love to see as many faces as possible. More importantly, we hope to see teams from the above-mentioned countries.
We are aiming for a 6 aside mixed touch event that welcomes those of all ages and fitness levels played under only slightly competitive
levels with short games of 5 min halves and unlimited bench substitutions. We can also help supplement teams that cannot quite get
enough players (10 players would be a solid aim), and we will have a children¡¯s exhibition game as well.
There will be an entry fee (KRW 300,000) for participating teams and will include some delicious food and beverages.
Please mark this date on the calendar, brush off those jogging shoes, and reach out to your fellow country men and women and see
if you can put together a worthy team! For more information and details, please contact the South African Chamber of Commerce
at info@safchamkorea.org; tjldickens@draju.com
or justinfhw@gmail.com.
The weather should be perfect, the mood will be festive and we hope to see friends and family!
Yours Faithfully,
SOUTH AFRICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE IN KOREA
