The FIFA World Cup 2010 is the biggest event that the Rainbow Nation has yet been accorded the honour of hosting. President Thabo Mbeki pledged to make the 2010 football World Cup in South Africa an "African Cup¡±. South Africa offers FIFA passion, profitability, precision (in administration) and the spirit of the African people for Africa¡¯s first World Cup.

Football - or soccer, as we call it - is the most widely played sport in South Africa, with its traditional support base in the black community.

South Africa's premier soccer venue is the FNB Stadium, known as Soccer City. It seats a massive 94 700, and never has it made for a more thrilling sight than on 3 February 1996, when Bafana Bafana beat Tunisia in the final of the African Cup of Nations.
