Adventure - Take a walk on the wild side

If you're seeking unusual, authentic adventures, with a big dash of fun and as much challenge as YOU decide you can handle, all at a very reasonable cost - look no further than South Africa! You've landed in adventure heaven. Roll up your sleeves and get stuck into getting to know the country up close and personal. Your choices of experiences are essentially limitless.

You'll be spoilt for choice if you're looking for full-throttle outdoor adventure - all our nine provinces offer a huge range of such activities. The tiny village of Jeffrey¡¯s Bay on the south-eastern coast just happens to be a year-round host to the ¡°perfect wave¡±. Its form is perfect, with awesome barrels that allow surfers to pull off superb and astounding moves both inside and outside the wave. Jeffreys Bay, home to the MSF Billabong Pro six-star rated surfing contest, has become a surfing Mecca.

The even more remote Sodwana Bay in Zululand is home to the world¡¯s southern-most coral reef, and a paradise for snorkelling and scuba diving. South Africa is where you can toss yourself over the highest bungee jump in the world off the Bloukrans bridge in the Western Cape, where you can hit the white waters of the Orange River in rubber ducks (inflatable boats), where you climb the peaks of the mighty Drakensberg mountains, where you can microlight through the hills of Mpumalanga, and where you can dive - thankfully in a cage - in the middle of Great White Shark territory.

South Africa offers some of the world¡¯s toughest endurance races, including the Comrades Marathon (up a steep 90 kilometre incline between coastal Durban and mountainous Pietermaritzburg) and the Two Oceans, which wends its way amidst the mountains around Cape Town. Both races draw tens of thousands of competitors from all over the world, every year. There are several back-breaking canoe marathons, of which the king is the Duzi in Kwa-Zulu Natal, 170 kilometres of tortuous rapids, rocky hills and a myriad other discomforts ¡¦ snakes, for example.

There's a different level of outdoor activities which includes horseback trail-riding through vineyards, on the beach or in the mountains, cattle mustering, hiking for days through mind-blowing landscapes, quietly fishing for the noble trout in the Highlands, or tracking the rare black rhino for hours in the safe hands of a trained guide.

For something combining adrenalin, peace, tranquillity, and sheer beauty, try the tree-top canopy tour in Tsitsikamma. Surprisingly, for such a sunny country, we even have a bit of skiing in winter!

South Africa was built for the outdoors spirit, and we celebrate this in a hundred different ways. Whatever sport you love, all you need to do is fly out to South Africa and we¡¯ll do the rest. Equipment, playing fields, oceans, beaches and stadiums all await you¡¦
