CONVERSION OF A SOUTH AFRICAN DRIVER'S LICENCE TO A KOREAN DRIVER'S LICENCE:

A holder of a SA driver¡¯s license can convert it to a Korean driver¡¯s license. For more information in this regard, contact the Driver¡¯s Licence Agency (Korean Dirver's Licence Office) nearest to your place of residence for requirements. Please visit their website for instant information; http://www.dla.go.kr/english/02_news/news01.jsp

One of the requirements is a Embassy certificate which is a confirmation from the Embassy in Seoul. The confirmation is issued upon presentation of the verification/confirmation document from the Department of Transport in South Africa.

STEP 2: CONFIRMATION FROM THE SOUTH AFRICAN EMBASSY, SEOUL
 

Once you received the verification/confirmation document from the Department of Transport (the original only), you may submit the following to get a confirmation from the Embassy.
1. Original SA driver's Licence
2. Original verification/confirmation document from the SA Department of Transport
3. Identification (SA ID or SA passport)

STEP 3: KOREAN DRIVER'S LICENCE FROM THE KOREAN AUTHORITIES
 

Once you have an Embassy confirmation (a true copy of the original of SA driver's licence), you will have to hand it with other requirements to the Korean authorities for a Korean licence. KOREAN INTERNATIONAL DRIVER'S LICENCE:
 

International driver's licence is an internationally recognized translation of your domestic driver's licence. It must be accompanied by your driver license when you travel. In case of foreigners, only thoses who have resided for more than 3 years in Korea can get an international driver's license from Korea.
However, those whose visa status are D-5, D-6, D-7, D-8, E-1, E-3, E-4, E-7, F-1, F-2, F-3 and F-4 can get an international driver's licence from Korea, regardless of the length of their stay in Korea, once they obtain their Korean driver's licence.

INFORMATION FOR TRAVELLER: SA CITIZENS VISITING FOR HOLLIDAYS
 

SA citizens cannot exchange their SA driver's licence into a Korean licence unless they are normally resident in Korea. For short-term visitors, it is recommended to drive with your international driver's licence issued from SA.
